
Most problem-solving is just copying.
Someone hits a wall. They look at how everyone else solved a similar problem. They copy the approach, tweak it a little, and call it innovation.
That works fine — until the wall is too big to copy your way past.
The Rocket That Kept Hitting the Same Ceiling
Elon Musk ran into this exact wall building SpaceX.
Rockets, historically, get built by reasoning from analogy. You look at what’s been done before — the existing parts, the existing suppliers, the existing specs — and you build within those lines.
Every time his team tried that, they hit the same ceiling. The parts were always too heavy. Too big. Too expensive. Never efficient enough.
The specs weren’t wrong. They were just built for a different era, a different set of assumptions, a different set of constraints that nobody had questioned in decades.
Going Back to Zero
So he made his team go back to the beginning.
Not “what’s the best version of the current part.” Instead: what are we actually building, and why does it need to exist at all?
Strip away every assumption. Every “that’s just how it’s done.” Every inherited constraint nobody remembers agreeing to.
Then rebuild from raw physics and true cost — as if this was the first time anyone had ever tried to make it.
That’s first principles thinking. And it’s the reason SpaceX ended up with rockets that were lighter, stronger, and cheaper than anything reasoning-by-analogy ever produced.
Why This Is Basically a Cheat Code
Here’s the part that gets me every time I use this.
Reasoning by analogy caps your outcome at “as good as what already exists.” You’re bound by someone else’s old assumptions, whether or not those assumptions still make sense.
First principles thinking has no ceiling like that. You’re not improving on the old answer — you’re finding out what’s actually true, and building from there.
Most of the time, “impossible” or “too expensive” isn’t really about the problem. It’s about an inherited constraint nobody bothered to re-check.
How I Actually Use This
When I hit a wall now, I ask myself two questions.
First: what am I actually trying to accomplish here — not the method, the actual goal underneath it?
Second: if I’d never seen anyone else’s solution, what would I build from scratch, today, with what’s actually true right now?
Nine times out of ten, the “obvious” constraint I was fighting wasn’t a law of physics. It was just an old habit wearing a costume.
That’s the magic. Not that first principles thinking is faster — sometimes it’s slower. It’s that it finds solutions the copy-and-tweak approach can never reach, because it never stops to ask if the ceiling was ever real.
